Maui police identify hit-and-run victim

Maui police have tentatively identified the man fatally struck in a Sunday hit-and-run as a 50-year-old Lahaina resident.

His name was not released this morning because police were trying to locate family members, said Lt. Charles Hirata of the traffic investigation division.

The man, who was walking on Honoapi'ilani Highway, died after being struck about 2:10 a.m. by a vehicle traveling south, police said.

Investigators continue to search for the vehicle, which they believe to be a late-model silver Toyota 4Runner. Anyone with information on the case can contact police at (808) 244-6344.

Man arrested after attack with hammer

Police arrested a 41-year-old man Saturday in Nanakuli on suspicion of assaulting a female acquaintance in an attempt to intimidate her because she planned to testify against him in court.

The suspect allegedly went to the home of the 31-year-old woman before 6:18 a.m. and threatened her with a hammer. The woman told police he struck her on the hand when she raised her arm to fend off a blow to the head.

Police later arrested him at Nanakuli Beach Park.

Stolen equipment found in Wai'anae

Honolulu police have recovered a backhoe-loader stolen from Hickam Air Force Base earlier this year but are still seeking clues about the theft.

Wai'anae patrol officers responding to a complaint about construction equipment blocking traffic on Plantation Road found the 1999 Caterpillar backhoe-loader on July 31.

The machine, valued at $54,000, was stolen between May 29 and June 12.

Bones found at construction site

Police have alerted state historic preservation officials to what they believe to be ancient bones unearthed yesterday on the site of a Ka'a'awa house construction site.

Workers on the project at 51-338 Kamehameha Hwy. told police the bones were found at about 3 p.m. yesterday, although police weren't called until about 7 p.m.
