NOTEWORTHY: Barry Flanagan, formerly of Hapa, is winding up work on his "Instrumental Peace" CD, due in October and featuring a duet with Grammy winner R. Carlos Nakai, the Native American flutist.
On Maui recently, Flanagan had a gig with David Paquette. It was a homecoming of sorts, because it was with Paquette that Flanagan first performed after arriving in Hawai'i. Flanagan also is hankering to perform at a Gaelic acoustic music festival early next year in Dublin, Ireland. ...
John Kolivas, leader of the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, is marking his first anniversary Aug. 12 with an appearance at Kapono's in the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Time flies when you're having fun. It was nearly a year ago, last Aug. 14, when HJQ launched its first gig at Studio 6, and the membership has remained intact, even through the lean times after Sept. 11. Members are Richie Pratt on drums, Dan Del Negro on piano and Tim Tsukiyama on sax.
Among the year's achievements: the "Remembrance" CD that paid tribute to victims of 9/11 and the World Trade Center Relief Fund, resulting in a thank-you letter from New York Gov. George Pataki ...

Bumatai, who had blurry vision, is making great progress, but his pals are still on prayer overload. ...

Big catch of the day: Nani Dudoit, spouse of Ho'okena's Horace Dudoit III, whose hula captivated the crowd. ...

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, as part of a party of 31, wined and dined at Roy's in Hawai'i Kai before their Blaisdell Arena concert last week. No wonder Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante and Chad Smith were high-energy dudes in concert. ...
Same night, different table: Luther Vandross, a regular, was having his Roy's fix. ...
