Hilo Yacht Club leads billfish tourney

The Hilo Yacht Club is off to a strong start as it seeks its first championship of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.

Six Pacific blue marlin were tagged and released and two ahi were weighed yesterday, with the Hilo team landing two big blues to amass 600 points.

The Buzzard Angling Team from California is in second place with 300 points, followed by the Hawai'i Big Game Fishing Club Young Adults Team, also with 300 points.

Fishing in the 43rd annual event continues today, with 22 teams from six countries setting out from Kailua Bay.

Dickie Divine and Randy Rohner caught the marlin for the Hilo Yacht Club.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Babe Ruth (14): Micah Murashige had three hits and three RBIs as the Hawai'i Stars beat Tri-Valley, Calif., 13-6, at the Babe Ruth (age 14) Regional Tournament in Fallon, Nev.

Steven Dannaway pitched 5¡ innings of shutout relief as Hawai'i rallied from a 6-2 deficit.

Little League Junior (13-14): Waipi'o scored seven runs in the third to beat Northern California, 8-5, yesterday at the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) West Regional Tournament at La Mirada, Calif.

Bryant Katakura batted 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Joshua Suguitan had two hits and two RBIs for Waipi'o, which plays unbeaten Southern California today.

Little League Major (11-12): Unbeaten Idaho scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to hand Waipi'o its first loss, 3-2, yesterday at the Little League Major (ages 11-12) Northwest Regional Tournament at San Bernardino, Calif.

Kelsey Outram batted 2-for-2 for Waipi'o, which led 2-0 through four innings.

PONY Bronco (11-12): Winning pitcher TJ Esclito batted 4-for-4 and drove in five runs as Mililani beat Los Alamitos, Calif., 12-1, yesterday at the PONY Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Tournament in Whittier, Calif.

Kanalu DeMello batted 3-for-6 and Bryce Rivera had two hits and two RBIs for Mililani, which must beat Agoura, Calif., twice today to win the tournament championship.

Cooperstown (12-under): The Hawai'i Warriors of Manoa won two games yesterday at the Cooperstown Dreams Park Tournament in New York.

Rylen Morihara had two hits and two RBIs in an 11-7 victory over South Meriden, Conn., and Roger Kraemer batted 3-for-3, including a home run, and had two RBIs in a 5-2 win over Beech Mont, Ky.

YOUTH SOFTBALL

Junior Olympics (16-under): La Mirada, Calif., defeated the Blastaz, 5-1, Saturday, eliminating the team from Leeward O'ahu at the Amateur Softball Association Junior Olympic Fastpitch (16-under) B Nationals at Midland, Texas.

Kellie Nishikida batted 2-for-3 for the Blastaz, who finished seventh in the tournament.

Earlier Saturday, Alexis San Nicholas pitched a five-hitter and drove in four runs as the Blastaz beat Imperial Valley, Calif., 4-0.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Kalakaua repeats: Tournament MVP Tatri Lorenzo scored 17 points as the Kalakaua Wahine defeated Lynwood, Calif., 59-31, Saturday to win the 14-under championship of the And 1 Summer Classic in Las Vegas.

Careen Onosai added 11 points, and Christine Takara was named to the all-tournament team after helping Kalakaua defend its title.
