Pearl City blaze leaves 6 homeless

Advertiser Staff

A Pearl City family of six is homeless after a fire that broke out this morning roused two of the residents from their beds, starting with a 6-year-old boy.

Firefighters were called at 6:34 a.m. to a four-bedroom house at 1009 Luehu St., in a subdivision between the Pearl City library and police station.

Investigators are probing the cause of the fire, which reportedly began on a dresser in a downstairs bedroom shared by a husband and wife, 49 and 41, and their son, 6. Their 14-year-old daughter also lives in the house, as well as the wife's father, 70, and another 49-year-old woman who was asleep when the boy's shouts awakened her in her upstairs bedroom.

Nobody else was home, said the wife's father, homeowner Ignacio Sibayan, who added that the home is insured. Three other tenants who usually live in the home have been away in the Philippines, Sibayan said.

Damage was estimated at $75,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents, said Capt. Richard Soo, fire department spokesman. A total of 30 firefighters were called to the blaze, which was under control at 6:49 a.m.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with vouchers for clothing and temporary shelter, Soo said.
