Frazier deal includes incentives

By Ferd Lewis
Advertiser Staff Writer

Herman Frazier could earn up to $70,000 in bonuses this fiscal year on top of his $210,000 base salary under terms of the first incentive contract the University of Hawai'i has ever given to an athletic director.

Frazier signed a three-year contract upon succeeding Hugh Yoshida on Aug. 1.

In addition, UH officials said Frazier will receive a one month ($17,500) signing bonus and could earn up to three months in additional bonuses if the program meets specified targets.

He can earn bonuses if:

The football team wins a conference championship (one month's salary); UH wins a bowl game and makes money ($7,500); men's basketball team reaches the NCAA Tournament (one month's salary), the men's basketball team reaches the Sweet 16 (half of the coaches' bonus); the men's or women's volleyball teams reach the final four (one half of the coach's bonus); baseball goes to a regional (one month's salary); baseball reaches the College World Series ($10,000); the grade point average of all scholarship athletes is 2.6 or above for both the fall and spring semesters ($5,000); if there are no major NCAA violations ($5,000) in a year; if UH is ranked in the Top 20 in the US News & World Report ($10,000).

UH officials said Yoshida, who was paid $120,000 last fiscal year, did not have incentive clauses in his contract although they have become common in college athletics.

Had the incentives been in place, Yoshida may have been eligible for bonuses for the men's basketball team going to the NCAA Tournament, the men's volleyball team reaching the final four, having no major NCAA violations, and appearing in US News & World Report's Top 20.
