THE LEFT LANE
A very Brady pageant

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Wayne Brady will become the first African-American host of the Miss America pageant, set for Sept. 21 in Atlantic City and airing live on ABC. "It's a privilege," he said. "My selection as host is also a defining moment, as I will be able to proudly represent the African-American community for the first time in this role in the telecast's history."

Brady is married to former Islander Mandie Taketa and has performed live stand-up shows in Honolulu, doubling up on visits to the family. He's considered an ascending multi-faceted entertainer: a singer, impressionist, comedian and host. His new syndicated daytime variety talk show, "The Wayne Brady Show," will make its debut Sept. 2 on ABC. He also appears on the series, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?," entering its fifth season this fall.

Fix your nose on TV

More notes from the decline of the empire: ABC is looking for two women and one man for "Ultimate Makeover," a new show that, according to ABC.com, "will make dreams come true for three special people, and will encompass plastic surgery by a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, as well as the skills of a dream team of hair, makeup and wardrobe people and personal trainers."

Macy's goes plus-size

Although Macy's Woman, the store's division devoted to the plus-size woman, doesn't officially open until Aug. 17, we found women were already lining up in the Ala Moana Center store's department, with arms full of purchases.

The 10,000-square-foot section is on the fourth floor, between kitchenware and bed and bath. Initial offerings include casual knits from M.Mac, Style & Co., Charter Club and Tommy Hilfiger. Career wear by Eileen Fisher, Lauren and I.N.C. Woman round out the offerings. Trendy styles are in short supply, though there are some flirty floral skirts and embroidered linen separates. The look is mainly classic and conservative. Macy's Woman can also be found, though on a smaller scale, at Macy's Kahala Mall, Pearlridge, Windward Mall, Kailua-Kona and on Guam.

Designer dorm rooms

Before spending a bundle to ship furnishings for that dorm room on the Mainland, check this out. Fashion designer Todd Oldham has just introduced a line of home furnishings called "Dorm Room." The pieces come in stars and stripes and '60s-style florals. Colors are bright and designs are bold.

The collection includes a butterfly chair (cover $16.99, frame $16.99), ottoman ($24.99), wood storage drawers ($24.99) Chinese paper lanterns ($7.99) and a peg accent lamp ($14.99). A reversible faux fur throw that works for picnics, naps or snuggling up on a cold snowy night comes in argyle, flower and star patterns and costs $24.99. You'll find it at Target, which, of course, is all over the Mainland, though not here.
