Gated enclave wins for design

The privately gated Coconut Plantation at Ko Olina Resort & Marina in Leeward O'ahu was recently named the recipient of the prestigious Gold Nugget Award for Best Attached Residential Project of the Year, at the 2002 Pacific Coast Builder's Conference in San Francisco.

In its 39th year, the Gold Nugget Awards program is the premier event of the annual conference. The oldest and largest awards program of its kind, Gold Nuggets honor creative achievements in architectural design and land-use planning for a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial projects.


Coalition names new officers

The Hawaii Coalition Against Sexual Assault has selected its new officers for 2002 through 2004. They are: chair, Adriana Ramelli, director of the Sex Abuse Treatment Center at Kapi'olani Center for Women & Children; vice chair, Nancy Moser, executive director of the YWCA of Hawaii Island; treasurer, Jeanne Ohta, interim executive director of the state Commission on the Status of Women; and secretary, Rev. Mike Young of First Unitarian Church of Honolulu.

The coalition was established in 1981 by five sexual assault agencies in Hawai'i. Its membership now numbers 22 and includes representatives from adult and child sexual assault treatment agencies, adult sex offender treatment programs, the criminal justice system, state government agencies and women's and community programs.


Scholarships go to four

The following scholarships have been awarded:

  • Alexander & Baldwin Inc.: Gregory Lum of Makawao, Maui, a magna cum laude graduate of King Kekaulike High School who is interested in mathematics and science; Lauren Morita of Kailua, an Iolani School graduate interested in forensic science. Both received $2,000 scholarships.
  • USA Funds: Monica I Ling Lee, a graduate of Moanalua High School, won a $1,500 scholarship. She is a biology major pursuing a bachelor's degree at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

Also receiving a $1,500 USA Funds scholarship was Symphonie Kaai, a Nanakuli High School graduate pursuing an associate's degree in medical office procedures at Hawaii Business College.


Interns at Meiji Foundation

Serving as summer interns at the Meiji Foundation are Jason Arimoto and Dawn Matsui, both of the University of Southern California; David Harrison of the University of Virginia; Lynne Saito of Willamette University; and Michael Shigemasa of Seattle University.

The internships were made available through a gift to the Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i from the Meiji Foundation, which is administered by Pacific Grand Insurance Co.

Through the internships, students learn about research design and methodology and experience firsthand the conducting of experiments in an actual research environment.


Lung group coordinator

D. Taylor Boyd has been hired as the Neighbor Islands community partnerships coordinator by the American Lung Association.

Boyd, who was director of student life at Hawai'i Pacific University for the past five years, will oversee the development and maintenance of working relationships between the Lung Association and various community organizations, businesses and individuals. She will be assisted by coordinators on Hawai'i, Kaua'i and Maui.

Boyd received her bachelor of science in secondary education from Loyola University and a master of arts from HPU.

She previously served as dean of students at the Carroliton School in Miami and as associate registrar at HPU.
