Kaimuki party to affect traffic

Traffic in Kaimuki will be diverted tomorrow around a block party on Wai'alae Avenue celebrating the completion of Phase 1 of the city's $2.6 million business district renovation project.

Starting at 3:30 p.m., Wai'alae Avenue from Sierra Drive to Koko Head Avenue will be closed to traffic along with a small section of 12th Avenue.

Police officers will direct traffic to Harding Avenue and around the event.

Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. three entertainment stages will be set up in the street for live music, hula and theatrical performances. Area restaurants and shops will set up food and craft booths.

The Kaimuki Kanikapila, sponsored by the Greater East Honolulu Community Alliance and the city, will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a blessing for the renovation project followed by children's activities and community booths set up at Kaimuki Community Park.

Parking is available at Kaimuki High School, St. Patrick's School and Sacred Hearts Academy. A free trolley service will transport people to the block party.

Junior lifeguard games tomorrow

More than 200 junior lifeguards will take part in a state championship competition from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Junior lifeguards from O'ahu's four program sites and the Neighbor Islands will demonstrate skills learned during summer training and compete in individual and team events in two age divisions, 13-14 and 15-17.

The junior lifeguards will compete in five events: 1,000-meter beach run, beach flags, run-swim-run, paddleboard relay and a 200-meter swim.

The junior lifeguard program is sponsored by the city's Ocean Safety Divisions.

Navy providing beach access

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Navy will process public entry passes for the Pacific Missile Range Facility from noon to 3 p.m. on weekdays at the Pass and Identification Office, just past the main gate in Building 353.

Residents seeking access to the beaches fronting the base must obtain an application form from any county neighborhood center. The form must be taken to the police department for a criminal records check and then turned in at the missile range for issuance of an identification card.

The range reported that nearly 300 passes have been issued since the program began in late July.
