Star of the Sea plans workshop

A Hawaiian arts and liturgical inculturation awareness workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Star of the Sea church in Wai'alae-Kahala.

Topics include the history of the Sacred Hearts Order in the Islands, music inculturation and the growth of the local diocese. Presenters include the Rev. Clyde Guerreiro, provincial of the Sacred Hearts Congregation here; Robert Mondoy, music ministry consultant; and Patrick Downes, editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald. The workshop also will provide information on making haku lei and Hawaiian instruments.

Seminar to support awareness of deaf

Na Lima Aloha of Honolulu, with Deaf Missions of Council Bluffs, Iowa, will host a "God Loves Deaf People" seminar Sept. 26-28 at Nuuanu Baptist Church and Sept. 29 at Magic Island.

Speakers include Duane King, founder and director of Deaf Missions; author and interpreter DeAnn Sampley; Colleen Cidade-Matusof, former Miss Deaf Hawai'i; Chad Entinger, ministries coordinator at Deaf Missions; and Stephen Zarriello, pastor of Wahiawa Door of Faith Church.

Workshop topics include: deaf culture and awareness, translating song lyrics and Scripture into sign language, calling the church to deaf ministry: creative activities for teaching the Bible to deaf people and Resources for Deaf Ministry.

Registration is $35 ($45 after Sept. 12), including materials, snacks and some meals. Child care, transportation and interpreters available.
