Big Island motorcyclist dies

A Big Island man who was involved in a motorcycle accident Thursday night died of his injuries yesterday.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Shawn Walker of Honoka'a.

Police on the Big Island said Walker was riding his 1998 Yamaha motorcycle on Kamehameha Avenue near Keaukaha when he lost control of the bike at about 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police they saw a motorcyclist speeding and doing wheelies shortly before the crash.

Walker was taken to Hilo Medical Center and then flown to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition.

He died yesterday at about 8 a.m.

An investigation into the cause of the accident was under way.

Police said Walker was wearing a helmet.

Walker's death was the 17th fatality for the Big Island this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year.
