Wai'anae's lesson in market forces

Here's hoping this weekend's Wai'anae Coast Sunset on the Beach is even more successful than the first one.

The city did all the heavy lifting for the first successful event, held in March.

But "there's no blank check from the city anymore," said Mark Suriso, a member of the coast's Neighborhood Board. City Council has "put a lid" on this kind of spending.

Now, left to their own devices, all sorts of enterprises and organizations are getting involved with enthusiasm. What we're seeing is a measure of pride and resourcefulness the West Side may not have known it has.

And in a way that isn't yet altogether clear, it also shows that when people want something badly enough, government doesn't have to provide it.
