Final-day catch boosts Malindi to billfish win

Malindi Sea Fishing Club of Kenya caught a 482 1/2-pound Pacific blue marlin on the final day to win the 43rd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament at Kailua, Kona, on the Big Island yesterday.

Malindi, which won its first HIBT, finished with 682 1/2 points, 482 1/2 for weight, 100 bonus points for largest fish of the day and 100 bonus points for largest fish of the tournament. Glenn Reece of Malindi reeled in the big catch on the Lady Dee, captained by Allan Ayano.

Hilo Yacht Club, which had led since since Monday, finished second with 600 points. Port Hacking Game Fishing Club finished third, followed by Hawai'i Big Game Fishing Club Young Adults Team and King Harbor Marlin Club.

Tournament Anglers of Hawai'i won the ahi division.

During the tournament 16 billfish were tagged and released and one boated. Five ahi were caught.

Ahi division: Tournament Anglers 382; Foxy Lady Fishing Team 380; Port Hacking Game Fishing Club 160.

SOCCER

Bulls win championship: The Bulls of the Honolulu Soccer Club, featuring some of Hawai'i's top 17-under high school players, won the Under-19 Gold Division at the 22nd annual San Diego Surf Cup.

Mid-Pacific's Richard Higa scored the Bulls' lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Dallas for the title on Monday.

The Bulls team, which featured Iolani All-State player Duke Hashimoto, defeated Colorado Springs, 1-0, on a Andy Magyar goal in the semifinal.

The Bulls were 4-0-1 in the three-day tournament and outscored their opponents, 8-1.

GOLF

Seki tied for 20th: Honolulu's Jim Seki Jr. shot a final round 78 and finished tied for 20th at the 36th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship yesterday at Chula Vista, Calif.

Seki, a Stanford golfer and Punahou alumnus, finished the 72-hole tournament at 293, 20 strokes behind winner Brock Mackenzie of Yakima, Wash. Mackenzie shot a 72 yesterday and finished a stroke ahead of Dan Swanson of Surrey, British Columbia (71).

Matthew Kodama, a University of Hawai'i golfer, shot a 72 to finish at 296.

Hawai'i finished 14th in the Morse Cup team competition, which uses the best 2 of 3 scores each day for the team total. Hawai'i, which only had two player, finished at 589, 19 strokes behind champion Northern California.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Little League Majors (11-12): Isaac Moises hit a bases-empty home run in the fourth inning for Waipi'o in its 4-1 loss to Oregon yesterday at the Northwest regional tournament in San Bernadino, Calif.

Waipi'o finished 2-2 in the opening round-robin, and faces Washington today in the tournament semifinals.

Babe Ruth (14): Northern California, needing to win two games, swept Hawai'i, 5-2 and 9-6, in the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth 14-and-under Regional Tournament in Fallon, Nev. Thursday.

Hawai'i's Conan Young and Elijah Chee were named to the All-Tournament team.

Northern California advances to the World Series in Albany, N.Y., Aug. 17-24.

SOFTBALL

ASA (12-under): Kaikamahine beat the Utah Black Magic 12-3, but lost to the Scottsdale Storm 7-1, and was eliminated from the ASA Junior Olympic Girls 12-under National A-Division Fastpitch Softball Tournament at Sterling, Va.

Kaikamahine finished 4-2.
