Charmingly nostalgic accessories hot

By Paula Rath

There's something reassuring about a charm bracelet, a collection of personal mementos, each imbued with special meaning. Perhaps that's why these nostalgic pieces are among the hottest accessories as we approach the anniversary of Sept. 11.

Honolulu retailers are taking to the trend. Pictured here is one of the hottest arm charms, by Dogeared, featured in this month's InStyle magazine and available at Ohelo Road in the Kahala Mall.

Tiffany carries the classics: Elsa Peretti's sterling silver zodiac signs, the "Etoile" heart in 18k gold with diamonds set in platinum, or a delicate cross. Tiffany has charms for every milestone.

Maui Divers' charms are all about Hawai'i: dolphins, whales, flowers and aloha hearts. Martin & McArthur goes local with charms depicting shave ice, geckos, turtles and canoes. Logo charms are prevalent at upscale European retailers such as Celine and Bulgari.

Florinda's Treasures at Riches Kahala can customize tiny framed photos for Tutu (Grandma), baby's first birthday, a wedding or any other occasion.

Another option is to check out vintage shops, such as Collectique in the Antique Alley at 1347 Kapi'olani, where you can often find very reasonably priced and kitschy charms from bygone days, many with Hawaiiana themes.

For those who prefer to make their own charm bracelets, bead stores such as Bead It, Creations by You and DACS Beads sell chains, clasps and charms.
