Alapa'i project to close two lanes

Advertiser Staff

City officials are warning motorists to avoid Alapa'i Street near the Municipal Building this week, where a major construction project will close two lanes of traffic.

Work to build a concrete pad fronting the bus terminal near South King Street begins tomorrow and is expected to last until Aug. 23.

The two right-hand lanes of Alapa'i Street will be closed to traffic 24 hours a day during the construction, officials say.

The five-lane road is heavily traveled, especially during the evening rush hour, when many downtown and government workers use it to access H-1 Freeway via Punchbowl Street.

The work, which also will require some parking and traffic flow changes at the intersections of Kapi'olani Boulevard, South Street and South King Street, is necessary to replace the deteriorating pavement in front of the Alapa'i Street bus stop.

Officials say motorists should use alternative routes or allow for extra time while driving in the area.

The project is part of a contract awarded to Haron Engineering. Other work that will involve lane closures includes:

  • Kapi'olani Boulevard and South Street, Aug. 28 to Sept. 4, one makai lane closed 24 hours a day.
  • Beretania and Ward Avenue fronting the Academy of Arts, Sept. 5 to 11, two mauka lanes closed 24 hours a day.
