BEST BETS

• W. ROY GRIZZARD, the first person to hold the position of assistant secretary for disability employment policy, will be among speakers at the 20th Annual Industry Liaison Group national conference, Wednesday to Friday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the South Kohala coast of the Big Island.

Gizzard, nominated by President Bush, will advise Labor Secretary Elaine Chao on issues related to employment of people with disabilities and will work with Labor Department agencies to increase job opportunities for that segment of the work force.

Other speakers at the conference of government contractors will be Charles E. James Sr., deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance; Cari Dominguez, head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Hawai'i County Mayor Harry Kim; and U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.

With a theme "Working Together Toward the Future," the conference will deal with the impact of affirmative action/equal opportunity policies, as well as diversity issues.

Conference sponsors include Hawaiian Electric Industries as well as such major corporations as Boeing, Hilton, Motorola, United Parcel Service, Lockheed and Microsoft. Registration: 945-1100.

• State Tax Director Marie Okamura will discuss "Tax issues in Taxing Times" at the monthly meeting Aug. 21 of the HAWAI'I ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION. The meeting, which will include a buffet lunch, will begin with 11:45 a.m. registration in The Plaza Club, in Pioneer Plaza. A question-and-answer session will follow the speech. • It's the deadline to register for an upcoming luncheon presentation, "Meeting Your Match with Hong Kong," focused on China business partnership opportunities, especially for smaller firms targeting China's opening market.

The guest speaker will be Sarah Monks, director of the corporate communication and marketing department of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and former executive editor of the south China Morning Post newspaper.
