Gone but not forgotten

Forget that pilgrimage to Graceland. Die-hard Elvis fans wanting to honor the 25th anniversary of the King's death on Friday can head to the Hawai'i State Library instead.

A commemorative display, "ELVIS Has Left the Building ... Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16., 1977," will be on exhibit through Aug. 23 on the library's second floor. Elvis album covers, 45 rpm singles, photos, Elvis dessert plates and other memorabilia provided by Bailey's Antiques and Aloha Shirts — it's all here. For more info: 586-3520.

Cancer concerns

When news breaks about breast cancer research, an organization of physicians and professionals called the Hawai'i Breast Society gets together to talk about what it means for patients.

In light of the recent report that hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of breast cancer, heart attack and stroke, there should be a lot to discuss when the group holds its annual meeting Aug. 22.

Women concerned about breast cancer are invited to attend. It begins with a 6 p.m. reception at the Kapi'olani Women's Center, 1907 S. Beretania St. Reservations required: Lindsay Cooper, 973-3152; e-mail her at lindsayy@kapiolani.org. On the Web: www.hawaiibreastsociety.org.

ABC hunts new ideas

The first step toward recovery, according to self-help lore, is admitting you have a problem. ABC may not be ready to admit it — but it's certainly acting like it's trying to fix things.

It's acquired the USA Network detective series "Monk," which will have a four-week run on ABC starting tomorrow at 8, in an unexpected move.

Equally surprising was ABC's recent announcement, that it was bypassing Disney's Buena Vista TV arm to enter into a two-year agreement with HBO.

These days, ABC is throwing everything against the wall, hoping that something sticks.

As they say in the old movies, it's crazy, but it just might work. And with Fox nipping at ABC's heels, anything beats the status quo.
