UH alums winners in beach volleyball

Former University of Hawai'i player Jason Salmeri teamed with Stevie Li and former Wahine Chastity Nobriga with Linda Nelson to win the men's and women's titles, respectively, at the Fifth Annual Aqua Hotels Players Championship yesterday at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Salmeri and Li defeated UH senior Tony Ching and Dorje Djkocic, 21-16, 15-21 and 15-9, for the men's title. UH senior Eyal Zimet and sophomore Jose Delgado finished third.

Nobriga and Nelson beat UH's Lily Kahumoku and Maja Gustin, 20-22, 21-19, and 15-12, in the women's championship match.

RUNNING/WALKING

• 5K at Ka'anapali : The sixth annual Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk, part of the Maui Marathon race week activities, will be held Sept. 21 at Ka'anapali, Maui.

The 5-kilometer event starts and ends at Whalers Village.

An awards ceremony will include refreshments, entertainment and door prizes.

Entry fee is $20, postmarked before Sept. 10, and $25 thereafter. No race-day entries will be accepted.

Applications are available at various Maui locations or by calling (808) 871-6441. Applications also will be accepted at Maui Marathon Sports and Fitness Expo, 1-8 p.m., Sept. 20 at the Westin Maui.

YOUTH BASEBALL

• Hawai'i undefeated: Hawai'i pounded 12 hits to defeat Nord Lakeshore, La., 13-4, at the Babe Ruth World Series for 13-year-olds at Abbeville, La., yesterday.

Hawai'i plays Brooklyn Area, Minn., today in pool play. It completes pool play against host Abbeville on Wednesday.
