Thief may plan to use police uniform

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

Police are warning the public that someone may be impersonating a Honolulu police officer, after an officer's uniform and other belongings were stolen from his personal unmarked car in Kalihi this month.

A badge and ID also had been stolen but were recovered later, police said.

The uniform has the name "D. Kaawa" on the left chest, police said. They said Officer Kaawa drives only a marked police car, or "blue and white," while on duty.

Any motorist stopped by someone in Officer Kaawa's uniform and driving an unmarked car should call 911, they said.

A driver suspicious of any officer's identity should acknowledge the officer's presence, then go slowly to the nearest police station or crowded public area before stopping. The driver may also call 911.

Generally, only uniformed HPD officers may stop motorists for traffic violations. A plainclothes officer who witnesses a traffic violation will usually request that a uniformed officer pull the driver over.
