Woman arrested in store assault

A 56-year-old woman was arrested yesterday in Hale'iwa on suspicion of assaulting a health-food store cashier who would not accept her avocados for sale.

Police were called after 4:30 p.m. to Celestial Foods, where the suspect had approached the victim, 33, with the proposal to sell the avocados.

The cashier told police that she had declined and had advised the woman to ask again when the store owner returned. The suspect allegedly threw a glass vase that was being used to hold incense at the cashier and drove off.

The suspect was found later at home and arrested.

Man hit in Kalihi accident

An 82-year-old male pedestrian was listed in guarded condition today at The Queen's Medical Center after he was hit by a motor vehicle near the Kalihi Shopping Center.

Police were investigating the accident and did not release details this morning.

Ambulance and fire crews were called shortly before 6 a.m. to 2295 N. King St. The man was taken in critical condition to Queen's, where later he was upgraded to guarded.

The accident was one of several this morning that may have been related to wet road conditions, said Nelson Makua, an HFD firefighter.

Cars overturned at Arizona Road and Ka Uka Boulevard, a motor vehicle collision was reported at Atkinson Drive, and a car struck a fire hydrant in Anoiki Street in Pearl City.

The red 1986 Honda ATVs disappeared between 4:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and 6:20 a.m. Aug. 5, police said. Each of the vehicles has racks on the front and back.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Sherwin Taka of the Puna Patrol, (808) 966-5385, or the police nonemergency number, (808) 935-3311.

Waimea drowning victim identified

Kaua'i County officials have identified the child who drowned Saturday in a swimming pool as Darci Isoshima of Waimea.

The child, 4, was a guest at a birthday party at Waimea Plantation Cottages when the accident was reported after 5 p.m., officials said.

Attempted murder case investigated

Detectives are investigating an attempted murder last night in Ka'a'awa in which a 26-year-old man is accused of firing a sawed-off shotgun at his cousin, who escaped injury.

The male victim, also 26, told police he was fishing with friends opposite Mahie Point, also known as Crouching Lion, at 10:45 p.m. The suspect allegedly drove up and almost struck the victim's girlfriend before stopping, police said.

An argument began and, while still seated in his car, the gunman pointed the shotgun at the victim, fired once and missed, said police.
