Punahou grad to fly 50th flag
Pilot Maria Lippi Schwartz has been selected to represent Hawai'i in "Flags Across America," an organization formed to commemorate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.
Schwartz will join an entourage of 49 other private pilots representing the state capitols who will journey from airports across the United States and convene in New York City for the first anniversary of that tragic day.
The pilots, flying their own airplanes, will bring a commemorative flag from each of the states and present them to family members of victims in ceremonies near the site of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.
Schwartz was raised in Kane'ohe and is a Punahou School graduate. She taught for several years at ASSETS School, working with dyslexic and gifted children. Schwartz temporarily lives in Durham, N.C., with her husband and four children.
