Hawai'i's Lee one shot behind in mini-tour

Hawai'i's Regan Lee continued his Gateway Tour surge yesterday, shooting his second consecutive round of 5-under-par 67. Lee is one shot behind leader Matt Bergstrom (65-133) going into today's final round.

Lee has made the last seven cuts on the mini-tour, which plays at courses in the Phoenix area. He has just one bogey in this tournament, which came on his final hole Monday at the Wildfire Golf Club's Palmer Course. He had five birdies yesterday at Desert Highlands, four on the front side.

• Miyajima advances: Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot a 3-over-par 74 to advance to match play in the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. The tournament is being played at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y.

Miyajima's 146 qualifying score was 11 behind medalist Courtney Swaim, a USA Curtis Cup player who shot a qualifying record 135.

Kailua's Bridget Dwyer (79) was one of 15 tied at 151, the cut line. Dwyer and 12 others were eliminated in a playoff.

In a heat advisory in the metropolitan New York area, the heat index topped 100 and defending champion Meredith Duncan nearly collapsed from an asthma attack on the back nine. She was given medical treatment on the 11th hole and shot a 79 to make the cut by three.

• Wilson third: Hilo's Amanda Wilson shares third place after the first round of the 2002 Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals. Wilson's brother Gabriel is 26th in the boys division.

The 34th annual tournament is being held at Houston's Northgate Country Club. It is presented by the Tiger Woods Foundation and ends Friday.

Amanda, 14, shot a 3-over-par 74 and is four shots off the pace set by Nevada's Christine Fernandez. Gabriel, 17, shot 75 and is eight shots behind leader Beau Glover of Arizona.

The field is cut to the low 60 boys and low 30 girls today. More than 400 state and local qualifying events determined the field of 123 boys and 51 girls. Past champions include Tiger Woods, Billy Andrade, Cristie Kerr and Justin Leonard.
