'Rolling Requiem' to honor 9/11 victims
Advertiser Staff and News Services
A "Rolling Requiem" will circle the globe Sept. 11 in remembrance of those who died in the terrorist attacks a year earlier.
It will begin with a choir in New Zealand singing Mozart's "Requiem" at 8:46 a.m. local time, the time when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Choirs in each time zone will continue, striking up the first note at their own 8:46 a.m.
In Hawai'i, where the last voices will be raised in song, the "Requiem" will be sung at Kawaiaha'o Church, conducted by Susan Duprey, with John McCreary on the organ and five soloists.
For information, check www.rollingrequiem.org, or phone 595-3043 to inquire about Hawai'i's participation.
Top-notch shave ware
A shaving system that contains shea butter, an ultra-moisturizing ingredient, was recently introduced by L'Occitane en Provence. In Honolulu, it's available exclusively at McQuaid's Fine Living in the Waikiki Landmark building. Neutrogena now has a three-step system called "Razor Defense" to wash, shave and treat the skin. Available at drug stores or www.NeutrogenaMen.com.
DDF, a dermatological line at Sephora, offers an antibacterial lotion that calms the bumps and a mask that absorbs oil, often a culprit in breakouts. Phytomer, a spa line available at the Hilton Waikoloa Spa and Sephora, has a pre-shave mask and an after-shave skin conditioning treatment.
Self-esteem overdose bad for relationships
Love thyself?
Maybe the self-help books are wrong. All that advice that says before you can have a successful romantic relationship, you must first love yourself might be baloney, according to a new study headed by a psychologist at the University of Georgia.
Turns out those with positive self-regard bordering on narcissism are usually miserable mates selfish, manipulative, unfaithful and power hungry. Though they may at first seem charming and interested in a relationship, they soon look for dominance rather than delight, says the study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
Narcissism, it turns out, has many ill-starred variants, and the so-called self-esteem movement may have been completely wrong in saying that a person who doesn't love herself or himself can't successfully love others.
