Suspect in cop-car theft goes to court

An O'ahu man accused of stealing a police officer's Dodge Durango after an Aug. 6 traffic stop in Whitmore Village and then trying to run down the officer made his initial appearance in District Court yesterday on charges of auto theft, assault, escape and terroristic threatening.

Although the case was initially classified as an attempted murder because Ronald Lewis Medeiros, 35, allegedly tried to run over police officer Edson Duncan after taking Duncan's sport utility vehicle, he was not charged with that offense.

Bail for Medeiros was set at $100,000. He was captured by police at a Palolo apartment after a weeklong manhunt.
