Hawai'i's Lee falls short in Gateway Tour playoff

Advertiser Staff

Mikkel Reese birdied the first playoff hole to win The Gateway Tour's 10th stop yesterday over Matt Bergstrom and Hawai'i's Regan Lee. The tournament was played at Desert Highlands Golf Course, near Phoenix.

Lee closed with a 3-under-par 69. He finished tied for first at 13-under 203 with Bergstrom (70) and Reese, who shot a course-record 64.

The trio went back to the 17th hole for the playoff. Reese, who had bogeyed the hole earlier, sank his birdie putt. Lee settled for par and Bergstrom had a bogey.

Lee, who shot his second straight bogey-free round, three-putted the 18th hole for par, his six-foot birdie putt lipping out.

Lee's share of second place was $11,500, which gives him $34,000 on the mini-tour. He moved into eighth place on the money list.

The tour takes next week off. Its final four events are 72 holes, including the Tour Championship, Sept. 23-26 at the TPC of Scottsdale Stadium course. The Top 50 on the money list qualify for the last week.

• Miyajima moves on: Gaining momentum from a first-round rally, Maui's Shayna Miyajima blitzed her second-round opponent at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. It is being played at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y.

Miyajima, a Baldwin graduate about to begin her junior year at San Diego State, defeated Jennifer Perri, of Minnesota, 6 and 4 to advance to today's quarterfinals.

Miyajima won her first-round match, 2 and 1, over England's Emma Duggleby. Miyajima was 3-down after six holes, but won the seventh and eighth, then squared the match with par on the 14th hole. Pars at the 16th and 18th — both par-5's — gave her the victory.

Miyajima plays Mollie Fankhauser, of Columbus, Ohio, this morning.

Courtney Swaim, who set a scoring record during qualifying, lost her first-round match, as did defending champion Meredith Duncan.

• Hilo's Wilson in second: Hilo's Amanda Wilson is in second place, nine shots off the lead after two rounds of the 2002 Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals yesterday at Northgate Country Club in Houston.

Wilson, 14, shot 74—148 and trails Christine Fernandez, of Henderson, Nev., who shot 69—139 to lead the girls' division.

Wilson's brother Gabriel, 17, shot 80—155 and made the cut for the final two rounds in the boys' division.

Kevin Silva, of New Bedford, Mass, fired a 4-under 67 to lead at 139.
