College Big Man Camp likely on move

Advertiser Staff and Wire Services

The college portion of the Pete Newell Big Man Camp is most likely moving to Las Vegas, camp organizers said.

Event coordinator Merv Lopes said it was "pretty much" a done deal that the camp would move from Kamehameha School's gymnasium to Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus.

Lopes said cost was the main issue for the move.

While NBA players often have their camp paid for by their teams, college players have to pay their own airfare, hotel, meals and registration fees.

The NBA camp will most likely stay in Honolulu, if it continues.

"The pros tell me that they can go to Vegas anytime and that they love coming to Hawai'i," Lopes said. "But the cost for the college players to come is becoming a real factor."

A record 42 college players are attending this week's camp, along with 30 pros.

YOUTH BASEBALL

• Babe Ruth (13): Kapono Chang pitched four innings for the win and batted 2-for-3 as Hawai'i beat host Abbeville (La.), 6-1, yesterday in the final game of pool play at the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series.

Chang struck out four.

Hawai'i, which went 4-0 in pool play, receives a bye today, when the single-elimination championship bracket begins.
