Burglary suspect caught in building

Police have charged a 29-year-old man with a break-in early yesterday at the warehouse used by 'Ewa Villages Non-Profit Development Corp., the company responsible for the 'Ewa Villages Revitalization Project to refurbish plantation homes.

Chance Wykes, who has no local address, was arrested after the break-in, reported at 1:26 a.m. at 91-1201D Renton Road.

The alleged burglary set off an alarm, and the alarm service notified police and 'Ewa Villages personnel, who then opened the warehouse for responding officers.

Police found Wykes hiding in the warehouse, as well as signs of forced entry. The door of a vehicle parked inside the warehouse was open and its stereo was missing, police said, adding that the stereo and other items were stacked by the entry point.

Wykes was charged with second-degree burglary and the auto break-in and is being held in lieu of $11,000 bail.

Man bitten by dog in Pearl City clash

Police are investigating a case of terroristic threatening in Pearl City last night that started with an argument over a statement made on a CB radio and ended with a dog bite.

A 47-year-old man and his dog were parked in a lot at 850 Kamehameha Highway at about 8:50 p.m., police said, adding that the suspect was angry over what the other man had said over the radio.

The suspect, also 47, allegedly threatened the man with scissors and was trying to pull him from the car when the dog bit the suspect on the nose.

Convict skips out on work program

WAILUKU, Maui ­ A man nearing the end of a 20-year sentence for sexually assaulting and beating to death an elderly Big Island woman did not show up for a work furlough assignment yesterday and remains at large today.

Nedrian Kapika, 40, was convicted of manslaughter for the 1981 death of an 84-year-old woman who was attacked in her Waiakea Houselots home.

Kapika is 5 feet 11 inches and weighs about 205 pounds. Police advised against approaching the man if spotted. Instead, contact the Maui Police Department at 244-6400 or CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.

Woman, teenager held in mail theft

KIHEI, Maui ­ A woman and a teenage girl were arrested for credit card theft after officers found mail addressed to the residents of 15 Maui Meadows streets in their car, police said yesterday.

Alicia Press, 22, of Kihei was charged with five counts of credit card theft and is being held on $25,000 bail. The other suspect, a 16-year-old, was released to her family.

Maui Police Department Lt. Jon Morioka said patrol officers on Wednesday responded to a call from a Maui Meadows resident indicating that the woman and girl were placing fliers in mailboxes and possibly removing mail as well.

The fliers, which advertised a baby-sitting service, listed phone numbers that were disconnected. Police later found and arrested the woman and girl on Kupulau Drive, Morioka said.
