Tonight's Must-See

"Monk," 10 p.m., USA Network. This series has become a ratings success, mixing complex mysteries and clever character touches. Tonight's mystery has the eccentric Monk (Tony Shalhoub) probing a story that doesn't add up. A business magnate turns mugger and is then shot dead by an ex-cop.

Of Note

Football, 2 p.m., Fox. Opposite styles collide when the Chicago Bears visit the St. Louis Rams. Can the brawn of the upstart Bears match the dazzle of the Rams?

"Dateline," 7 p.m., NBC. This continues the "Firehouse" documentary series, which looks at New York Ladder Company No. 5.

"The Legacy of Sin: The William Coit Story" (1995), 9 p.m., Lifetime. In the world of true crime stories, this one is particularly well made. Neil Patrick Harris is excellent as an ordinary guy who starts having serious suspicions about his mother (Bonnie Bedelia).
