Hawai'i finishes third at Babe Ruth World Series

Hawai'i filled the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but lost to Nord Lakeshore, La., 3-1, yesterday in the semifinals of the Babe Ruth World Series for 13-year-olds at Abbeville, La.

With the bases loaded, Lakeshore pitcher Tyrone Brinson got a strikeout and a line out to shortstop to end the game.

Rick Miyamoto went 2-for-2 for Hawai'i.

Hawai'i was awarded third place in the tournament based on its 4-1 record.

Lakeshore meets Levittown, Pa., in today's championship game. Levittown defeated Jefferson Parish, La., 6-4, to reach the final.

MORE YOUTH BASEBALL

American Legion (18-under): Hawai'i defeated Utah 13-3 yesterday to improve to 2-0 in the American Legion Region 8 (Western) Tournament at Las Vegas.

The team features players from Mid-Pacific Institute's baseball team, which won the state championship this year.

On Thursday, Mid-Pacific rallied for two runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth for a 10-5 victory over Woodland Hills, Calif.

Blake Kaneshiro had three hits and scored two runs. Ryan Basco had two hits, including a two-run double to right field in the bottom of the eighth. Jonathan Hee and Ryan Leong each had two hits for MPI.

Basco pitched eight innings for the victory.

Hawai'i completes the opening round-robin today against Nevada.

Cal Ripken (11-12): Kaimuki meets Effingham, Ill., this morning in the opening game of the Cal Ripken World Series at Matoon, Ill.

Kaimuki will play four games in the opening round-robin, which runs through Thursday.

BOXING

Sofa, Miyose advance: Wai'anae's Kini Sofa Jr. and Glenn Miyose Jr. advanced to the finals of the Under-19 National Boxing Championships at Eldorado Hotel Casino in Reno, Nev.

Sofa, competing in the 112-pound division, defeated Francisco Rodriguez of Chicago by walkover on Thursday, and Eddy Copes of Cleveland, yesterday, when the referee stopped the contest in second round.

Miyose, fighting at 125 pounds, decisioned Enrique Rosas of Angleton, Texas, 26-2, on Thursday, and defeated Ricardo Alvarez of Danville, Ill., when the referee stopped the contest in the first round yesterday.

If Sofa and Miyose win today, the will represent the United States in the Under-19 World Championships in Cuba in October.

Two other Hawai'i boxers lost on Wednesday. Todd Parks (147 pounds) of Mililani lost to Alvin Acosta of Bronx, N.Y., when the fight was stopped in the second round.

Peter Costa Jr. of Honolulu (147 pounds) lost to Abraham Han of El Paso, Texas, when the fight was stopped in the fourth round.

GOLF

Wilson sixth: Hilo's Amanda Wilson shot an 81 in the final round of the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals yesterday at the par-71 Northgate Country Club in Houston.

Wilson, 14, who started the day in second place, finished sixth, shooting 74-74-81—229.

Christine Fernandez, of Henderson, Nev., won the girls' title, shooting 80—219.

Kevin Silva of New Bedford, Mass., shot 71—210 to win the boys' title. Wilson's brother Gabriel, 17, shot 76—231, and finished 39th.
