HPU honors Fulbright chair

Caroline Matano Yang, chair of the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board in Washington, D.C., has received the Fellow of the Pacific Award from Hawai'i Pacific University in recognition of her outstanding contributions and service to international education.

The Hawai'i-born Yang is chairman of the body that oversees the worldwide Fulbright program, including establishing policies and approving all grants.

• Kevin Kauweloa, a senior at Wai'anae High School, has received a $1,500 scholarship from College Connections.

In spite of surgery for a benign brain tumor that interrupted his school year and much-loved football, he improved his SAT scores dramatically. Teachers called him one of the hardest-working, most positive thinking students they have encountered.

• Alika Conley of Waimea, Hawai'i, a graduate of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has received a scholarship from the Hawaii Cattlemen's Council Inc. He will attend Washington State University, majoring in Animal Science.

He has an outstanding academic record and has been active in school and community activities. He also worked part time for Ponoholo Ranch for three years during school breaks and on weekends.

• Crystal Rose Gouveia of Honoka'a, Hawai'i, also has been awarded a scholarship by the Hawaii Cattlemen's Council. A graduate of Honoka'a High School, she will attend Eastern Wyoming College, majoring in Veterinary Technology.

She has an outstanding academic record and has been involved with school and community activities, especially 4-H Livestock. She has also worked part time on a hog farm and a goat farm.

• Scholarships awarded by other organizations:

• New Hope Christian Fellowship, to Lester Manding, who will pursue a major in religious studies, and Narceliza Domingo, who plans to pursue a career in nursing and one day minister to the needs of children and families in the Philippines.

• National Society of Accountants, to Andrew Kamikawa of Mililani, a second-year accounting student at Chaminade University.

• Big Island Press Club/Robert C. Miller Scholarship, to Elizabeth Rock, a senior at the University of Nevada, and Leah Gouker, a Pahoa High School graduate bound for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa; the Jack Markey Scholarship, to Malia Banashek, a Pahoa High School graduate; the Yukino Fukabori Scholarship, to Tiffany Hilton, a Hilo High School graduate.

• Robinson A. McWayne Memorial Scholarship, to Alice Marie Campbell, a freshman at Colorado State University from Wai'anae.

• University of Wisconsin Medical School, to Blake Smith, a Whitman college graduate in biology, who attended Iolani School. He is in Costa Rica this summer volunteering with a health organization called Amigos de las Americas.
