2 Wai'anae boxers best in nation

Two Wai'anae boxers are heading to the Under-19 World Championships in Havana after winning national championships yesterday in Reno, Nev.

Kini Sofa Jr., 17, of Nanakuli High School, decisioned Oscar Venegas of Maywood, Calif., 34-21 in the 112-pound division final of the Under-19 National Championship.

Glenn Miyose Jr., 17, of Wai'anae High School, decisioned Damon Murillo of San Fernando, Calif, 11-5, in the 125-pound final.

Bruce Kawano was the team manager for the Hawai'i boxers.

More than 80 boxers, ages 17- 19, competed in 12 weight classes in the four-day tournament held at the Eldorado Hotel Casino.

The 19-under World Championships are scheduled for October.


SOCCER

• National score: The National Veterans Cup, already scheduled for Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park in 2003, has been awarded to Hawai'i for 2004 as well, Hawai'i Soccer Association president Donna Fouts announced yesterday.

Next year's tournament will be expanded, adding two divisions to the lineup of age groups of over-40 and over-50 years men and women. More than 80 teams from the U.S. and other countries will bring in about $4-million in tourist spending, said Frank Doyle, tournaments director for the Hawai'i Soccer Association.

"The success of the recent AYSO National Games was a factor in the award" of the 2004 tournament by the United State Soccer Federation, said Jack Sullivan, vice president of the Hawai'i Soccer Association's Amateur Division.

"Soccer is moving up," Sullivan said, noting that the USA men's national team cracked the top 10 in world rankings for the first time in history last week.

Sullivan said the Hawai'i Convention and Visitors Bureau and Outrigger Hotels assisted with Hawai'i's presentation at the U.S. Federation's annual meeting in San Francisco.

• Special Olympics: Sixteen Special Olympics soccer teams and 46 Bocce teams will compete in the 5th Annual Aukeke Classic on Aug. 31 at Waiau District Park.

Opening ceremonies is at 8:30 a.m. Bocce and Soccer championship games are expected to begin at 1 p.m.


WATER POLO

• Hawaiian Water Polo winners: The Hawaiian Islands "A" team defeated Modesto, 3-1, yesterday to win the girls' 16-under division of the 34th Hawaiian Water Polo Tournament at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

On Friday, Hawaiian Islands women's open team defeated Davis 6-2 for the championship.

Hawai'i teams reached the finals in seven of the eight divisions in the week-long tournament.

Hawaiian Islands 18-under teams lost in their championship matches. Newport boys defeated Hawaiian Islands "A" 6-5 and Commerce girls defeated Hawaiian Islands 4-3.

Other winners were South Coast (male 14), Diablo (male 16), Bruin (male open), Commerce (female 14).


QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Amemiya to speak: Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association, will discuss the upcoming football doubleheader between Hawai'i and California teams at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Restaurant.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m.. and meeting at noon.

St. Louis plays De La Salle and Kahuku and Long Beach Poly on Sept. 21.

Also on the agenda, are Ryan Tanoue, St. Louis High School graduate and nationally-ranked sharpshooter at University of Nevada and Kaipolani Wallwork, defensive tackle, of the Hawaiian Legends women's football team

Tanoue won two bronze medals in the junior division at the World Shooting Championships earlier this month in Lahti, Finland.

The Quarterback Club also will honor the outstanding sports persons for July, 10-year-old Michelle Dudley and 82-year-old Shoichi Tanouye, outstanding female and male athletes, respectively, of the 2002 Aloha State Games.


RUN/WALK

• UH-Hilo benefit: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo will host the 12th annual Big Island Invitational on Aug. 31 at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo campus.

The 5K run and 2-mile walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Entry fee is $15, and includes a T-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the UH-Hilo cross country program.
