Suspects sought after Kalihi brawl

Police are seeking suspects connected with a brawl outside a Kalihi bar Saturday that culminated in shootings, stabbings and an assault with a baseball bat.

The fight started at Tondo Tondo, 746 Kohou St., at 2:15 a.m. and spilled out to the front of the club, police said.

The club manager tried to intervene, police said, and was hit with the bat. Police later identified a 21-year-old man suspected of that assault and arrested him.

Two other victims were stabbed in the back, police said, and two were shot in the hand.

Pearl man charged with assault on teen

A 22-year-old Pearl Harbor man was arraigned this morning, accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl he met through the Internet.

Bail was set at $20,000 for Tomasz Kowalczuk, charged yesterday with first-degree sexual assault. He allegedly had sex with the victim on several occasions in the Wai‘anae area.

Autopsy awaited in Makapu'u death

Autopsy results were pending today in the case of a 50-year-old man whose body was found floating offshore at Makapu‘u on Saturday.

Emergency workers were summoned at 2:40 p.m. but were unable to revive the man, police said. He was taken to Castle Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Robber sought in home invasion

A man in his 30s is being sought in connection with a home-invasion robbery at a Lime Street apartment on Saturday.

Police were called after 7 a.m., when the man allegedly entered through an unlocked lanai door at the second-floor apartment. He then allegedly demanded money of the female resident, who told police she screamed and awoke her husband.

The robber then allegedly followed her into the bedroom and repeated his demand; she retrieved $100 from a wallet. The husband told police the intruder had a semiautomatic handgun tucked in his waistband.

Man stranded by fire rescued

Neighbors came to the rescue of a 65-year-old Waikiki man Saturday when an apartment fire left him stranded on his lanai.

Firefighters were called at 11:51 a.m. Saturday after witnesses saw fire in a second-story unit at 254 Ka'iulani Ave.

The man was helped to an adjacent lanai, suffering only minor cuts to his feet, police said.

Armed robbery suspect sought

Police are seeking a man in his 20s in connection with the armed robbery of a Waialua store on Saturday.

An employee of Paalaa Kai Store, at 66-945 Kaukonahua Road, told police the man entered the store at 5:40 p.m., brandished a handgun and demanded money. He allegedly fled in a small foreign car.

Search goes on for male boater

The search for a boater who has been missing off the Big Island since Wednesday continued through the weekend and today.

Two C-130 aircraft continued to search yesterday for Jason Henderson, 30, who failed to return from a fishing trip off Mahukona Harbor. One C-130 was deployed this morning, along with the P-3 aircraft that the Navy dispatched over the weekend.

The Army National Guard conducted ground searches on the northern coast of the Big Island as well as the southern coastline of Maui on Saturday, while an Army Guard helicopter crew searched the water.

Maui motorist critically injured

A 39-year-old Lahaina man was listed in critical condition today at Maui Memorial Medical Center after a two-car crash yesterday on Maui.

Police said the crash happened at 11:18 a.m., near mile post marker 23 on Honoapi'ilani Highway.

The man was driving a 1986 Dodge Ram pickup truck north on the highway when he veered left, crossed the center line and collided with a 1997 Mercedes Benz driven by a 41-year-old Lahaina woman.

The pickup went into a spin and the man was thrown through a passenger-side window and into a guard rail.

The woman in the Mercedes, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.

The man was hospitalized with a broken femur, broken jaw and skull fracture.

Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
