THE LEFT LANE
Portraits of Sept. 11

A New York City trial lawyer who also is a painter has embarked on a project to paint portraits of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York — as many of the nearly 3,000 who died as he can manage.

What began as a private, self-help exercise by Michael DeMinico, 50, has turned into a public art project; a nonprofit foundation has even been set up to support the effort, with a Web site at www.portraitmemorialfoundation.org. DeMinico, who is married with two children, has scaled back his law practice to pursue the project. He figures it will take several years to finish all the portraits that have been requested by family members.

Fashion keepers

As fashion's whims pass, what to keep, what to discard? In the August issue of Bazaar, the magazine's editors advise what items to hold on to for another season and what to store. They say keep items that are out of style out because in the world of fashion, "what goes around comes around."

The editors' keepers are anything gold, especially gold pendants on leather cords; stacked-heel boots; slouchy suede bags; furs; sophisticated, ladylike blouses; and micromini skirts. The storage pile should include turquoise jewelry; cowboy boots; distressed leather bags; capes; frilly peasant tops; and anything voluminous, such as a long, full skirt.

Chocolate tunes

British-birthed, Seattle-based drum 'n' bass DJs Stakka & Skynet will spin at the debut of "Chocolate," a series of turntable events launching tonight at the Wave Waikiki. Drawing its name from co-promoters James Marshall's and Taharba James' African-American ethnicity, "Chocolate" No. 1 will offer up hip-hop and house DJs and live drumming by Jammarek. DJs include DownTempo Don, Sean Kamano, Scottie Soul, DJ 2000, A2Z and Zita. Hosting will be DJ Sovern T.

"Chocolate" No. 2 happens next Monday, headlined by drum 'n' bass turntablist J. Majik. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for 21 and older, and $15 for ages 18 to 20. Doors open at 9 p.m. Call 941-0424, ext. 12.
