Tonight's Must-See

• "Intimate Portrait," 7 p.m., Lifetime. When Jane Kaczmarek and Kate Burton met at Yale, they were fascinated by their opposite worlds. One grew up in show business, the daughter of Richard Burton. The other grew up in Milwaukee in a big Polish family. They became friends and roommates. Kaczmarek remained the wide-eyed Milwaukee kid, different from her show-biz friend. On a blind date with Bradley Whitford, she learned he was also from Wisconsin. They soon married, with Kaczmarek obsessing on the wedding flowers. "She has this deranged Martha Stewart thing," Whitford says in this documentary. Then came the week when everything changed. Her series ("Malcolm in the Middle") and his ("The West Wing") made network lineups and she learned she was pregnant. Now they have fame and a family. This "Portrait," skillfully done by actress-director Lee Grant, is one of the best in the series.

Of Note

"Teen Choice Awards," 7 p.m., Fox. Nelly, BB Mak and Jennifer Love Hewitt (who hosts) sing in this show, which offers lots of offbeat presenters. They range from The Rock and Tony Hawk to Kelly and Jack Osbourne (Ozzy's kids) and the four "American Idol" finalists. Among those to appear are actors Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Tobey Maguire, Jack Black, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Selma Blair, Seann William Scott; singers Mandy Moore and Ashanti; Jessica Alba and the casts of "7th Heaven" and "The Bernie Mac Show." Also invited: six finalists from "American Idol" and judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell.

"Everybody Loves Raymond," 8 p.m., CBS. Here's a wonderful rerun that starts when Debra tentatively calls her mother-in-law "Mom."

"Mystery: Inspector Lynley Mysteries," 9 p.m., PBS. A Scotland Yard inspector (Nathaniel Parker) who has a lot of money is paired with a sergeant (Sharon Small) who has a lot of troubles. They're an interesting team. However, the first half of this story seems dark and distant.
