Students earn research grants

• The following Hawai'i students attending the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., have received grants to aid them in conducting research in their chosen fields of study. They are:

Amanda Lanani Josiah of Makakilo, recipient of a C.A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Scholar grant, who is researching the literary, social and cultural implications of learning and preserving an endangered indigenous language, specifically the Hawaiian language, a project important in validating the preservation of Native Hawaiian culture. Results will be used to encourage the state government to continue financial support of Hawaiian Language Education and/or to improve language programs.

Jaire Keiki of Nanakuli, recipient of a Summer Science Research Scholar Grant, for his work on the structure of protein.


Chinese society honors pair

The United Chinese Society recently honored Dorothy K.L.K. Lum, 80, as its Model Chinese Mother of the year, and Dr. Vernon Jim, 82, as Model Chinese Father.

Forty-five years ago, Jim's father, Kam Fat Jim, was the society's first Model Chinese Father of the year.

The society has served the Honolulu Chinese community since 1884.


MADD program gets $5,000

• The Hawai'i State Office of Mothers Against Drunk Driving has received a charitable grant of $5,000 from the Public Health Fund of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii to support its Public Awareness Outreach Program.

The program strives to heighten public awareness in Hawai'i about the dangers of impaired driving and to provide safe viable alternatives.


Priory tuition aid boosted

St Andrew's Priory School has received a $4,500 grant from the G.N. Wilcox Trust. It will be used to provide tuition aid for Priory students.

"We are very grateful that G.N. Wilcox trust has provided us with this generous tuition aid grant, which will help Priory students receive a quality education, regardless of financial need," said Caroline Ward Oda, head of the school.

St. Andrew's Priory School has also received a $4,125 grant from the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust. The money will provide tuition aid to Priory students.


$7,750 to re-do gymnasium floor

Saint Francis School has received $5,000 from the Atherton Family Foundation, $2,500 from the A & B Foundation and $250 from the Beta Beta Gamma Foundation for the resurfacing of the gym floor.


Three groups to get financial aid

• Governor Ben Cayetano approved the release of legislative grants in aid totaling $275,000 to be awarded to three arts organizations in Fiscal Year 2002.

Maui Arts & Cultural Center was awarded $100,000 for general operating support.

Honolulu Symphony was awarded $100,000 for its educational programs.

Hawai'i Youth Symphony was awarded $75,000 for its educational programs and general operating support.
