See our 'ohana
"We are 'ohana," the song says, and a new book of inspirational quotes and vintage pictures of Hawai'i families shows just how varied our families are. The miniature volume, " 'Ohana: Hawaiian Proverbs & Inspirational Quotes Celebrating Family in Hawai'i," was compiled and designed by Jane Hopkins for Mutual Publishing (hardback, $10.95).
Hopkins worked to assure that Hawai'i's diverse ethnicities were represented in the photos and quotations, which range from Sioux Indian sayings to excerpts from Mary Kawena Pukui's " 'Olelo No'eau." The photos, shot from 1853 to 1921, capture the eye, and we long for more information about the people in them. Photo credits are given at the end of the book, with names of the families, when that is known.
Helping hands
The Honolulu Theatre for Youth is looking for a few skilled volunteers for its costume shop. Milliners, seamstresses and crafters are needed to assist in creating imaginative costumes and embellishments for three upcoming productions: "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day," "Amazing Adventures of the Monkey King" and "Runny Noses, Tiny Tales."
Work can be done at the HTY costume shop or at home. Scheduling is flexible and any amount of time is welcomed. Call Casey Cameron, HTY's costume director, at 839-9885, Ext. 24.
