Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i rallied over the final three innings, but lost to Nevada, 7-6, in the final of the American Legion (ages 18-younger) Region 8 Baseball Tournament in Las Vegas.

Nevada advances to the American Legion World Series, starting Friday in Danville, Va.

Hawai'i trailed 7-1 after six innings, but scored five runs over the final three innings.

Hawai'i, composed mostly of players from Mid-Pacific Institute, scored a run in the top of the ninth, but stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Keven Whalen batted 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Hawai'i. Troy Hanzawa, Blake Kaneshiro, Jonathan Hee and Jeffrey Mizokawa also had two hits.

Whalen walked to open the Hawai'i ninth, but was erased on a fielder's choice grounder by Grant Yamaguchi. Hee walked and Mizokawa's single to left cut Hawai'i's deficit to 7-6.

But Nevada relief pitcher Jared Johnson struck out the next two batters to preserve the win.

Nevada scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take a lead it would not relinquish.
