Man killed by shooter near Waipahu High

Advertiser Staff

Police were looking for a man suspected of shooting another man to death just outside Waipahu High School this afternoon.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. on Waipi’o Point Access Road, just makai of the intersection with Farrington Highway.

An ambulance dispatcher described the victim as a man in his 30s. He had multiple gunshot wounds and was initially in critical condition. He died at 5:45 p.m. at The Queen's Medical Center, according to police.

Homicide investigators have taken over the case.

Honolulu Police Det. Gary Lahens said the shooting apparently was precipitated by a confrontation.

The victim was in a white car by himself and was shot multiple times, including once in the chest. Neighbors said they possibly heard as many as five shots.

An ambulance took the victim to St. Francis-West Medical Center, where a helicopter flew him to The Queen’s Medical Center.

As police investigated the scene, a white car with its door ajar sat in the mauka-bound lane of Waipi’o Access Road. Witnesses said the victim had been in that car.

Police were looking for a vehicle driven by a woman and with a male passenger, believed to be the shooter.

Waipahu High is not in session. The victim had no connection to the school, Lahens said.
