FASHION TRENDS
UH student has fashion weight on one shoulder

Editor's note: This summer, 23 University of Hawai'i-Manoa students and two teachers traveled to London and Paris to learn more about the fashion industry first hand in the capitals of chic. Advertiser fashion writer Paula Rath went along.

This is the first in an occasional series about the fashion trends the students picked up in Europe and are wearing at home in Honolulu.

Crystal Pancipanci says one-shoulder tops are all the rage in Europe.

Crystal Pancipanci of Wahiawa, a senior fashion design major at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, is working this summer at Shirokiya.

Her personal style is trendy and trés chic. Since she was in London for the four-day Queen's Jubilee, celebrating 50 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, she wanted to find something to remind her of the patriotic spirit surrounding the events.

Her European finds: A one-shoulder top with a print that's an original take on the British flag and big-puka fishnet stockings.

Q. Where did you find them?

A. "I found the shirt at Camden Market in a stall run by a Turkish man whose brother is the designer. The fishnets are from Topshop."

Q. Why did you choose them?

A. "The shirt is London-influenced, but not an in-your-face flag. I like the comfy sweatsuit-like cotton. Everyone in Europe is wearing fishnets — ya gotta have 'em."

Q. Where did you first see the trend?

A. "I saw the sweats-for-streetwear trend in Lucky magazine and at bebe, but it wasn't anything like this."

Q. What are you wearing it with now that you're home?

A. "I wear it with my bebe culottes, Guess belt and red pointy shoes from Ross, and my hat from Nordstrom Rack. I dress it down with sneakers."

Q. What's a no-no?

A. "You shouldn't over-accessorize a top like this. A necklace would be too much. With fishnets, you should never wear anything too tight or too short, because it can look tarty."
