'Ewa man charged in Aug. 14 shooting

A 39-year-old 'Ewa man has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly shot a man he suspected of stealing stereo gear from his garage.

Roger Peralta is free after posting $50,000 bail.

According to a court document, Peralta is accused of shooting a 35-year-old man in the neck about 7 p.m. Aug. 14.

Police who reported to the scene, 91-1109 Hamana St., said Peralta told them the victim "was trying to steal my stereo."

The victim was lying on the ground while people attended to a gunshot wound in his neck, according to testimony.

Police said Peralta then told them he left the weapon, a .25-caliber Beretta that is registered to him, on the table in the garage, where it was recovered.

Two women indicted in swindle

Two Hawai'i women have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly taking money from people facing home foreclosure proceedings and promising to arrange new financing to stave off the foreclosures.

Edward Kubo Jr., the U.S. attorney for the Hawai'i district, said Arlene Nii, 42, and Tracy Kuhns, 32, were indicted Aug. 14 on nine counts of mail fraud. The indictments were kept secret until Nii was arrested Monday. She pleaded not guilty to the charges yesterday, while Kuhns has yet to be apprehended.

Kubo said the indictment accuses Nii and Kuhns of seeking out individuals facing foreclosure actions and promising to assist them in arranging for new loans if the clients would pay up-front fees. The two allegedly promised to return the fees if loans could not be secured, Kubo said.

He said the two used the names HomeSavers-Hawai'i and Hawai'i International Funding Company to collect thousands of dollars in advance fees from dozens of clients but did not obtain loans for them or refund the payments.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Nakamura has been assigned to the case.

Three arrested in hotel burglary

Police arrested a man and two women Monday in connection with a burglary at a Waikiki hotel in which one suspect was caught climbing between lanais.

A security guard at the Aston Coral Reef Hotel told police that at about 8:20 a.m. he spotted the man standing on a lanai and tossing a small black bag to an adjoining balcony, then climbing to that balcony.

Police were called and the suspect was arrested. A hotel guest identified an item taken from his room.

Police did not release details on the role of the two women arrested in the case.
