Advertiser Staff

Pearl Country Club pro Kevin Carll shot a final-round 72 yesterday to win the Aloha Section PGA/ Taylor-Made-adidas Assistants Championship, at Ko Olina Golf Club. He had a 36-hole total of even-par 144 and won $2,000.

Waikele's Scott Kaneko (77) and Hawai'i Prince's William Hunt (78) tied for second at 150. First-round leader Brad Buck (80-151) took fourth and Hilo Muni's Lance Taketa (75-152) fifth.

By winning, Carll qualified for the 2002 TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship, Oct. 24-27 at the PGA Golf Club (South Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Along with first-place money, he received a $500 bonus and round-trip ticket from Delta.

Carll was low medalist last year but declared ineligible due to an employment classification change.

• Ma ousted: Matthew Ma, of 'Aiea, did not advance to the match-play portion of the 102nd U.S. Amateur Championship at Bloomfield Hills, Mich. After opening with a 6-over-par 76 Monday at the Oakland Hills Country Club South Course, Ma shot 78 yesterday on the North.

Bill Haas, the 20-year-old son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas, shot a 68 on the South to earn medalist honors at 5-under 135. Five players tied for second, two strokes back.

The cut was made at 3-over-par 143, with 17 players in a playoff for the final 13 spots in the match-play field. The playoff will continue this morning, with four players remaining for two spots.

• Leonard slammed: Justin Leonard had a tough final round Sunday at the PGA Championship. His outlook brightened later when he got into the PGA Grand Slam of Golf via the alternate route.

The Slam will be Nov. 26-27 at Po'ipu Bay Resort on Kaua'i. Tickets can be purchased by phone (800) PGA-TCKT, or via the internet (pga.com).

Leonard will join major champions Tiger Woods (Masters, U.S. Open), Ernie Els (British Open) and Rich Beem (PGA Championship) at the Grand Slam. Woods' two victories opened up the alternate slot.

Leonard qualified by coming up first on the PGA of America's 2002 Major Champions Points List. He accumulated 253.5 points by finishing in the Top 20 at every major this year, including Sunday's fourth-place finish.

Retief Goosen was second (212.16) and Davis Love III was next (188.5). Only previous winners of majors can qualify for the alternate spot. Nick Price, who was first on the points list after the third major, dropped to fifth when he missed the PGA cut.
