18,000 students start UH Monday

About 18,000 students are expected to start their fall semester Monday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

UH will not have a total count of students until later this month, but officials expect a higher enrollment this year because "the number of applications have been going up in every instance," said Jim Manke, UH spokesman.

Other UH campuses on O'ahu — Honolulu, Kapi'olani, Leeward and Windward Community Colleges — will also open Monday.

Disabled children's foundation opens

Adults and children are invited to the opening of the Sea of Dreams Foundation at 11 a.m. Saturday at Makaha Marketplace, 84-1170 Farrington Highway.

Activities include live music, computers, games, door prizes, shave ice and bento sales.

Sea of Dreams is a nonprofit organization dedicated to unleashing potential in children with disabilities.

Programs include science camps, marine exploration field trips and Internet cyber clubs designed to advance the education and opportunities of people with physical challenges.

All proceeds from Saturday's event will benefit Sea of Dreams.

The organization's programs are open to everyone and tuition waivers are available for families with financial need. Sea of Dreams is supported by the National Science Foundation and by contributions from the community.

Niketown run set for Oct. 6

Niketown Honolulu has announced its third annual Niketown 5, a 5-kilometer race along Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki to benefit O'ahu schools.

All proceeds from the Oct. 6 race will be donated to O'ahu's public and private K-12 schools to finance athletic programs and play equipment. Last year, $45,000 was raised and distributed to participating schools.

The course starts and finishes at Niketown on Kalakaua Avenue. There is also a one-mile Kids Run around Fort DeRussy Park for children 12 and under. Parents can participate with their children if they wish. A post-race celebration will include food and beverages, and entertainment provided by KRTR 96.3 FM.

The race is at 7 a.m. Oct. 6, and the deadline to enter is Sept. 21.

Cost is $15 for adults 19 and older; $20 with a T-shirt. Children 18 and under pay $10 for the entry fee and T-shirt.

For more information on registering, visit Niketown Honolulu or call 943-6453.
