Setter Robyn Ah Mow, the team captain of the U.S. women's national volleyball team, will miss the remainder of the 2002 season because she and her husband are expecting their first child in February.
Ah Mow, a McKinley High graduate and two-time All-American at the University of Hawai'i, is under her doctor's orders not to play the rest of the season.
"I'm scared, but I'm excited," said Ah Mow. "At the same time I'm really bummed because I really wanted to play in the world championships. It was the only thing I was looking forward to this season."
Lizzy Fitzgerald, the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2001, is fully recovered from a sprained ankle she suffered at the Grand Prix and figures to be the starting setter for in the World Volleyball Championships in Germany, Aug. 30-Sept. 15.
As for her future with the national team after having her baby, Ah Mow did not hesitate.
"I'm coming back," she said. "My goal is to make it to the next Olympics. That's what I want to do."
