Veriato commits to Turtle Bay

Advertiser Staff

Jim Thorpe, Bobby Wadkins and Hilo's Steve Veriato will play in the second Turtle Bay Championship, a $1,500,000 Senior PGA Tour event Oct. 4-6 on the North Shore.

Veriato goes into this week's Uniting Fore Care Classic with a chance to win the same event in consecutive years under different formats. The Utah stop will use a modified Stableford scoring system for the first time. Last year, Veriato made the Novell Utah Showdown his first tour victory. He is currently 78th on the money list at $140,640.

The addition of Thorpe and Wadkins gives Turtle Bay six of the Top 10 on this week's money list. Defending champion Hale Irwin, who is No. 1, already committed along with Bob Gilder, Dana Quigley and Allen Doyle.

• One and out: Colette Rosenberg, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., shot a 7-over-par 79 Tuesday at Mid-Pacific Country Club to earn Hawai'i's spot at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. Honolulu's Mona Kim-Lee (82) is first alternate.

The 16th annual national tournament will be at Eugene Country Club in Oregon, Sept. 21-26.

The U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur is open to female amateur golfers who were 25 on or before Oct. 6, 2001, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4.

Qualifying for the 22nd U.S. men's Mid-Amateur is next Thursday at Mid-Pacific, with 11 golfers going for one slot. The national tournament is Sept. 21-26 in Greenwich, Conn.
