Kaimuki wins again at Ripken Series

Kaimuki amassed 10 hits to rally past Sikeston, Mo., 9-6, yesterday at the Babe Ruth Cal Ripken World Series (ages 11-12) in Matoon, Ill.

Kaimuki won its second game in a row to complete pool play with a 2-2 record and must await a game today involving Visalia, Calif. and Sikeston to see if it will advance to the championship round.

"The kids are feeling really, really good now," said a Kaimuki spokesman. "To finish off with two wins is a real positive feeling."

Kaimuki scored five runs in the third to overcome a 2-0 deficit, then added three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good at 8-6.

Aaron Fujiki, Geoff Kunita and Grant Liu had two hits apiece for Kaimuki.

Mikey Nagamine's two-run double sparked the five-run third inning, and Kunita and Liu hit RBI singles to highlight the three-run fourth.

VOLLEYBALL

• UH adds exhibition: Samorodok from Russia will play the fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in Sept. 17 exhibition at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Samorodok competes in the Russia High League. It will also play Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade.

Admission for the UH match will be $7 for adults, $6 senior citizens and $4 students.

The Rainbow Wahine open their season next Friday, Aug. 30, against ninth-ranked Ohio State.

• Stanley stars: Clay Stanley, a Kaiser High grad and former University of Hawai'i player, scored 13 points to lead the U.S. men's national volleyball team to a sweep of Egypt in the first match of the Sofia Cup in Bulgaria.

Stanley ripped a match-high seven service aces to go along with five kills and one block in the 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 win. As a team, the U.S. registered 12 aces, seven blocks and a hitting percentage of .460.

Team USA has now won four straight matches and eight of its last nine to improve its season record to 10-11.


PREP FOOTBALL

• Long Beach Poly support sought: Bob Moore, general manager of the Hawai'i Maritime Center, is trying to organize support for his alma mater — Long Beach Poly — in its game against Kahuku, Sept. 21, at Aloha Stadium.

The game is part of the HHSAA/First Hawaiian Bank Football Classic that will also match nationally No. 1-ranked De La Salle against St. Louis.

Supporters of Long Beach Poly, which has sent more players to the NFL (39) than any other high school in America, will be sitting in the school's section.

BODYBUILDING

• Suzuki places fifth: Paula Suzuki of Kapolei placed fifth out of 27 competitors at the Jan Tana Professional Bodybuilding Classic in Lynchburg, Va. last Saturday.

Suzuki, 34, earned an invitation to compete at the 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic in Columbus, Ohio, next March.
