Family facility seeks staff help

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai'i will open its first Ronald McDonald House Family Room in October in the children's ward at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children.

The nonprofit group is recruiting volunteers to staff the facility.

The family room will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily to provide some comforts of home within the hospital environment, according to Jerri Chong, executive director of the charity's Hawai'i organization. Families will use the room to rest, eat meals or even do their laundry.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and commit to at least two four-hour shifts per month for six months. Training will be provided.

Seniors asked to be mentors

The Hawaii Intergenerational Network needs volunteers for its FELLOWS (Fellowship, Education and Life Long Opportunities With Seniors) and SKIPP (Senior Kupuna in the Preschool Program) programs.

Volunteers help students to promote academic and social growth through mentoring, tutoring or just talking story.

Pali Highway work tomorrow

Motorists heading to Kailua over the Pali Highway this weekend will have to find another route from 7 p.m. tomorrow to 7 a.m. Sunday while the tunnels are being cleaned.

The Kailua-bound highway will be closed between Waokanaka Street and Kamehameha Highway, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Keiki hula event in La'ie Aug. 31

The Polynesian Cultural Center in La'ie will host the 12th Annual Moanikeala Keiki Hula Competition and Na Ka Mahina Malamalama Hawaiian Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 31.

The hula competition will take place at the center's Pacific Theater from 10 a.m. to noon. The festival takes place from 12:30 to 6 p.m., offering those in attendance an opportunity to learn more about Hawaiian culture.

Admission to the events is $7 for adults, $5 for children 5 to 11 years old and free to children under 4. Kama'aina Annual Passholders get in free.

Ha'iku horse center to open

HA'IKU, Maui — A blessing for the Tom Morrow Equestrian Center will be held at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.

The county facility, Maui's first horse center for public use, is at the 4th Marine Division Park on Kokomo Road in Ha'iku. It is named after horseman and late County Council member Tom Morrow, who helped initiate the project done with help from community volunteers.
