Waipahu shooting victim identified

The city medical examiner has identified the man who was shot and killed in Waipahu on Wednesday as Hayword Julio.

Julio, 30, died of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner said yesterday.

Julio was shot several times at close range as he sat in his rental car on Waipi'o Point Access Road just outside Waipahu High School.

Police last night continued to search for the person who shot Julio and for a woman who drove the getaway car, which was described as a gray Pontiac Grand Am. The car was last seen traveling east on Farrington Highway. Police received conflicting reports as to whether the shooter was a man or woman.

The shooting was the result of an argument between Julio and the two assailants, police said.

A witness said he saw the shooter arguing with Julio and leaning into Julio's car with a handgun before up to six shots were fired.

Julio was taken to St. Francis-West Medical Center and transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, where he died.

The killing occurred one day before the school year began at Waipahu High.

Homicide Lt. Bill Kato said neither the victim nor the assailants were associated with the school.
