Kaimuki ousted from Ripken world series
Advertiser Staff
Kaimuki won its game Wednesday, and yesterday found out that it would be its last game.
Hawai'i's representative in the Babe Ruth Cal Ripken World Series (ages 11-12) in Matoon, Ill., finished third in its pool. Only the top two advanced.
Kaimuki beat Sikeston, Mo., 9-6, Wednesday but had to wait until yesterday for the result of the Visalia, Calif.-Sikeston game, won by Visalia, 15-3. A Sikeston victory would have put Kaimuki in a tie for second, giving it a chance to advance.
The 17-team tournament included 12 teams from the United States and five international teams (Australia, Canada, Italy, Korea, Netherlands).
"Of course, it's a bummer we couldn't advance to the next round," said manager Donovan Oda. "The people here are really supportive. It's amazing how this whole town rallies around this tournament."
Oda said the players were housed by Matoon families.
"The kids did really well. We wish that every 12-year-old could experience this," Oda said.
Members of the team were:
Dane Von Seggern, Matt Edboi, Aaron Fujiki, Billy Ray Stutzmann, Grant Liu, Nick Tasaka, Ronnie Hirokawa, Sparky Gonzalez, Chase Nanod, Everett Collier, Dustin Dimaya, Geoff Kunita, Mikey Nagamine, Reyn Nagamine
Coaches: Gerald Oda, manager. Assistants: Donovan Oda, Keith Oda, Glenn Fujiki.
