Perkins, Miranda heat up in world longboard

Hawai'i surfers Bonga Perkins and Dino Miranda won their respective heats in the first round of the Oxbow World Longboard Championship yesterday at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Perkins, the No. 2 seed in the field and the 1996 world champion, recorded scores of 8.25 and 6.25 to easily win his opening heat.

Miranda, the 1997 world champ, won his heat after gaining entry into the contest as a replacement for California's Kevin Connelly.

Perkins and Miranda received byes in the second round because of their victories yesterday.

Among the other Hawai'i contestants, Rusty Keaulana, Chris Vandervoort, Duane DeSoto, Noah Shimabukuro and Kekoa Uemura placed second in their respective heats; Keegan Edwards placed third.

All of those surfers must now compete in the one-on-one, loser-out second round.


GOLF

• Three in LPGA qualifier: Hawai'i's Camie Hoshino, Christel Tomori and Summerset Lovett will play in the LPGA's first sectional qualifier, Tuesday to Friday at The Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, Fla.

Tomori and Lovett play on the Futures Tour. Hoshino has been playing in Japan the past few years.

The second sectional qualifier will be Sept. 10-13 at Landmark Golf Club in Indio, Calif.

Those that advance out of the qualifiers, along with non-exempt LPGA Tournament division members, go to the final LPGA Qualifying Tournament. That is Oct. 8-11 at the LPGA International's Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

• Free junior clinic: Casey Nakama, whose students include precocious pre-teens Michelle Wie and Bradley Shigezawa, will present a free junior golf clinic Sunday, Sept. 1, at Waikele Golf Club.

The 90-minute clinic begins at 9 a.m. on the driving range. There is no pre-registration. Several of Nakama's juniors will serve as clinicians.

VOLLEYBALL

• Bulgaria tops U.S. in final: Bulgaria nearly squandered a 2-0 lead but recovered in time to defeat the U.S. men's national volleyball team, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 27-29, 15-7, in the championship match of the Sofia Cup last night in Bulgaria.

Brook Billings led the United States with 15 points on 13 kills and two blocks. Reid Priddy added 14 points on 14 kills and former Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i standout Clay Stanley contributed 11 points on 10 kills and a service ace.

The loss ended the American's five-match winning streak.
