Lifeguards revive man from N.Y.

A 39-year-old Rochester, N.Y. man nearly drowned yesterday at Sandy Beach but was resuscitated by lifeguards.

Ocean Safety Acting Lt. Ron Bregman said the man had been attempting to bodysurf but was thrown to the ocean bottom by a wave.

When that wave passed and a second wave came, the man was brought to the surface, unconscious and without respiration or a pulse.

Lifeguards Jayton Ruiz and Kamalu Souza pulled the man out of the water and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Other lifeguards and firefighters assisted.

After a few moments the man started breathing, his heart started beating and he regained consciousness, Bregman said.

Emergency Medical Services personnel took him to Straub Hospital by ambulance for observation and treatment to a wound on his forehead, Bregman said.

A spokeswoman for Straub said the man was in guarded condition last night.
