Islands wilting as dog days of summer arrive

By Mike Gordon

It's not the start of a heat wave, but those oven-like tempertatures over the weekend are expected to continue all week.

As in, near-90 to 90-something with a steaming splash of humidity by Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures on O'ahu reached 90 on Saturday and yesterday, said lead forecaster Roy Matsuda. The mercury hit 90 one other day this year, on Aug. 1, he said.

"It's warm but it is characteristically August," Matsuda said.

The low tonight and tomorrow night is forecast to be 76.

The passage north of the Islands of the remnants of Hurricane Fausto will diminish the tradewinds by Thursday and Friday and create warm, muggy conditions.
